Is Your Fitness Routine a Debt or a Celebration? 3 Lies to Stop Believing Today
Have you ever found yourself doing "math" while you eat?
Calculating exactly how many minutes on the treadmill it will take to "pay back" that dinner, or deciding you have to "earn" your dessert with a grueling workout? If your fitness routine feels more like a mounting debt than a celebration of what your body can do, you aren't alone.
But here is the truth: Your body is not a calculator, and your movement should never be a sentence for something you ate.
The fitness industry has been lying to us for decades, and as we hit our 40s and 50s, those lies don't just go away—they get louder. If you feel like you’ve been fighting a losing battle with your body, I want you to take a deep breath. It’s probably not you. It’s the rules you’ve been trying to follow.
Today, we’re pulling back the curtain on the three biggest lies that turn healthy habits into a burden.
Lie #1: Exercise is Punishment
If I had a nickel for every time I heard (or said!), "I ate a huge meal, I need to go work it off," I’d have a very heavy pocket.
This mindset keeps us trapped in the debt cycle. We view movement as the tax we pay for being human and enjoying food. But when you exercise to "pay something back," you’re training from a place of shame.
The Shift: Turn from exercising to eat to fueling your adventures. Movement isn't a penalty; it’s the way you prepare your body for the life you want to live.
Lie #2: The Ultimate Goal is to Get Smaller
Society tells us that the gold standard of health is taking up as little space as possible. But as we age, "shrinking" often comes at a high cost: the loss of muscle mass and bone density.
If your number one goal is weight loss at all costs, you might be sacrificing the very strength you need to stay independent and active.
The Shift: Stop training for the mirror and start training for being in the world. When we focus on how we look, we lose out on how we feel. When you feel strong, you feel confident—and that is a metric no scale can measure.
Lie #3: No Pain, No Gain
We’ve been told that if we aren’t gasping for air or sore for three days, the workout "didn’t count."
But in midlife, our hormones are already in a state of flux. Constantly pushing into high-intensity red zone workouts keeps your cortisol (stress hormone) levels spiked. Paradoxically, high cortisol can cause your body to hold onto that stubborn midsection weight we’re often trying to lose!
The Shift: Train smarter, not harder. The magic isn't in the intensity; it's in the consistency. We need an ebb and flow that balances hard work with recovery and mobility.
A Message of Relief
If you’ve been living under the weight of these lies, let them go. Healthy habits in our 40s and 50s shouldn’t be another burden on your to-do list. They should feel like they are giving you the strength you need to keep moving forward.
